Lysaght Inspirations Design Awards 2020 Winners

The creativity and vision of Australia’s leading architects and designers have again come to the fore in the 2020 Lysaght Inspirations Design Awards, an initiative that recognised outstanding Australian architectural work incorporating LYSAGHT® steel building products.

The awards, now in their third year, were open to Australian-based architects, building designers, and architectural or design students, and sought nominations in four main categories: Commercial and Industrial, Regional Projects, Residential and Student Design.

Each category winner received a $10,000 cash prize, while the successful Student Design award recipient received a $5,000 cash prize. The work of all four winners will also be featured in the next edition of Lysaght’s Design Inspiration publication.

The respective category winners were:

  • Commercial and Industrial – Goodna State School grade prep and one building’ by arkLAB Architecture
  • Regional Projects – Mercy College Mackay Library by Bold Architecture + Interior Design
  • Residential – ‘Blue Wren’ by Get Smart Constructions
  • Student Design – Chatterbox House by Sandra C, Granville TAFE

Goodna State School prep and grade one building' by arkLAB Architecture incorporating CUSTOM ORB®, LYSAGHT LONGLINE 305® and WEATHERLINE®The Goodna State School building project by arkLAB Architecture in Brisbane, combines a visually-stunning design with practicality and low maintenance benefits which are important for public buildings.

The building features LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB®, LONGLINE 305® and WEATHERLINE®, made from COLORBOND® steel Surfmist® and Monument® in a Classic finish.

Mercy College Mackay Library by Bold Architecture + Interior Design incorporating LYSAGHT ENSEAM® and TRIMDEK®In Mackay, Bold Architecture + Interior Design’s, Mercy College library redevelopment saw the transformation of a single storey building into a double-storey structure, in pursuit of a building that would act as the heart and soul of a greater ‘student city’.

LYSAGHT ENSEAM® (made from COLORBOND® steel Basalt® in a Matt finish) was the cladding of choice and selected for its functionality, low maintenance qualities, and distinctive ribs and large pans.

‘Blue Wren’ by Get Smart Constructions utilising LYSAGHT TRIMDEK® and KLIP-LOK 700 HI-STRENGTH®The winner of the Residential category in Bermagui, New South Wales, showcased the ‘Blue Wren’ home which saw Get Smart Constructions design and build on a challenging, steep triangular block while also taking into account the sensitivities of a pristine coastal environment.

The design featured LYSAGHT KLIP-LOK 700 HI-STRENGTH® sheeting made from COLORBOND® steel Surfmist® in a Classic finish, which has been used on selected exterior walls as well as the roof.

Chatterbox House by Sandra C, Granville TAFE utilising LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB®, EASYCLAD® and the new CUSTOMFLOW™ cladding solutionStudent category winner, Sandra from Granville TAFE, in her work titled ‘Chatterbox House’, took styling cues from the Sydney Opera House as well as an origami chatterbox, to create stunning rooflines for her project.

Materials chosen for the project included LYSAGHT EASYCLAD®, made from COLORBOND® steel Cosmic® in a Metallic finish and LYSAGHT CUSTOM ORB®, made from COLORBOND® steel Dune® in a Classic finish, for all roofing.
